Home Renovation Tax Credit

What is the Home Renovation Tax Credit? (HRTC)

A 15% tax credit for home renovation purchases over $1,000 up to $10,000, made between January 28, 2009 and January 31, 2010.

How does it work?

Purchase $1000 worth of Home improvements, you get nothing.

Purchase $2500 worth of home improvements, you get $225 off your 2009 personal tax return($2,500 - $1,000 = $1,500 , $1,500 x .15 = $225)

Purchase $10,000 worth of home improvements, you get $1,350 off your 2009 personal tax return($10,000 - $1,000 = $9000 , $9000 x .15 = $1350)

What do I need to do to get it?

Buy Home improvements and have them completely installed before January 31, 2010 . Keep your receipts. Then when you file your 2009 tax return fill out the appropriate portion of your return.

What about the ecoENERGY retro fit program?

It is still running. So if you purchase energy saving home improvements you can double dip, and get the Tax credit and you are still eligible for the energy grants.
